COURSE CONTENT
Topics dealt are:

  • Self-awareness
  • Theories of counselling
  • HIV/AIDS VCT and counselling
  • Counselling special groups, loss & grief
  • Ethics for counsellors and trainers
  • Supervision of counsellors

This is a 5 months’, part-time course.

 

METHODOLOGY
The course uses a number of learning approaches, e.g. experiential, practical and interactive.
Participants will be trained in theory and practice of counselling. Through practice, observation and evaluation basic trainer skills will be taught.

Throughout the course a multitude of counselling and trainer skills will be demonstrated. Participants will practice skills daily. For example through mini lessons utilizing training methods and aids that have been learned during the course. Each will use a Trainer Skills checklist to keep track of the individual skills that are used. Time is allocated to model aspects of good trainership and training qualities. Meanwhile the participants will also become familiar with the content of the HIV/AIDS counselling skills training course itself.

Practice sessions will be audio or video taped for self-evaluation and group feedback.  At the end of the course all participants will present a 10-minute training lesson followed by evaluation and feedback from self and the group. This methodology through its practical components will result in participants having the skills necessary to be successful trainers. 

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum K.C.S.E. C-
  • Higher Diploma in Counselling
  • Motivation to become a trainer
  • In-depth familiarity with HIV/AIDS counselling materials
  • Counselling and training experience are an added advantage
