Doctorate in Counselling- DCouns Print E-mail

This course is being offered by KAPC in collaboration with The University of Manchester.

WHO
The course is designed for people who can make a contribution to the control and direction of counselling in the sub-Saharan region. Participants will be highly placed in their organisations and significant decision-makers. The Doctorate is very demanding in both personal and academic terms and participants must be highly motivated to meet the challenge. Participants must be computer literate and familiar with the internet as it is an integral part of the course delivery.

CONTENT
The course is 5/6 years part-time and is partly taught and partly a research thesis. There are 3 taught modules each lasting 1 year. These modules will be taught by Manchester University tutors.

  • Current Trends in Counselling
  • Professional Issues in Counselling in the Region
  • The Theory and Practice of Research

The curriculum has been designed to explore the philosophical foundations of counselling and to give participants a thorough understanding of the theories that control its practice. One of the aims is to review, consolidate, extend and explore counselling in all its aspects. After the 3 taught modules participants will engage upon a research study and present a thesis for examination. The topic of the thesis will be negotiated with tutors but should have the potential to make a major contribution to the development of counselling in the region.

METHODOLOGY
The methodology is participatory and experiential and course members are encouraged to actively contribute and take responsibility for their own self-directed learning. The academic content is delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Tutors from Manchester University travel to Kenya twice per annum to teach 1-week blocks. Participants will also meet on the monthly basis at KAPC tutors who will facilitate the group of participants.

ASSESSMENT
Each taught module has an extended written assignment which is submitted and assessed. The research component is assessed through a thesis which is printed and bound in accordance with the University’s requirements. Participants are also expected to make suitable contributions to the counselling debate. These contributions can be in the form of published papers or seminars for the local counselling community.
