The course is designed for people who wish to major in counselling and who can make a significant contribution to its direction and development. The course is demanding in both personal and academic terms and participants must be able to meet the challenge. Participants must be computer literate and familiar with the internet as it is an integral part of the course delivery.

CONTENT
The course is 2 years part-time and has 5 modules:

  • Exploration in Counselling
  • Understanding in Counselling
  • Integration in Counselling
  • Practice and Process in Counselling
  • Research Project and Dissertation

The curriculum has been designed to explore the philosophical foundations of counselling and to give participants a thorough understanding of the theories that control its practice. Personal development is promoted through reflection on the psychological theories of ‘self’. Consequently, the participants can demonstrate a critical understanding of these theories and their implications for counselling practice. The abilities to review, consolidate, extend and explore ‘self’ as a unique and singular individual are balanced against the concept of the individual as a community member.

METHODOLOGY
The methodology is participatory and experiential. Course members are encouraged to actively contribute and take responsibility for their own self-directed learning. The academic content is delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. The counselling skills are practised in supervised role-plays and through personal experiences. For the research module, participants choose a topic of personal interest. Each participant is appointed a personal tutor who supervises their work.

ASSESSMENT
Participants are assessed during the course by the submission of 6 written assignments. At the end of the course participants submit a video giving evidence of the participant’s ability to create a therapeutic relationship with a client. A written commentary, analyzing the skills and relating them to the theories and therapeutic outcomes of counselling, accompanies the recording. The research dissertation explains how the research was chosen, how it was conducted and what results were obtained.
